DECEMBER 2011
As I hope you all know, I am retiring this month, leaving the Academy in great hands. Jan Shadick, a friend and colleague for five years, is coming from ULT’s Swindon Academy to take over as Principal from 1st January.

I am having a tea party with parents on Tuesday 6th December at 5.00pm. I am hoping that parents who have stood by the Academy through times good and bad will come so that I can thank them personally.

One of those teachers was thoughtful enough to send me part of an essay one of our Year 7s had written on leadership, which I reproduce below. It was one of the nicest things that people have said to me this year or indeed any year.

Our students are the most wonderful group of vibrant, energetic, occasionally infuriating, always inspirational, young people I have ever taught. One example of this is our participation in The Shakespeare Schools Festival - an event the Academy has supported from the very beginning. I will never forget Kieran Carney playing Mistress Quickly in drag in the Merry Wives of Windsor.

Many people have asked me what I intend to do after January. I hope to be helping train a new generation of headteachers. I was proud to become an Associate of the Institute of Education this month and will be lecturing on a Masters course in Education, involving some of the great young teachers in South London. However the main thing I want to do is to spend more time with my family. This is what politicians say when they resign in disgrace from Parliament, but in my case it is absolutely true! As teachers we all have to be aware that sometimes work life balance gets skewed towards work, but my main advice for anyone is that “family comes first”. Now it is payback time.

DECEMBER 2011
I am really looking forward to coming to Lambeth Academy in January and to working back in London again. I have been made to feel really welcome by everyone that I have met, despite the fact that change can sometimes be a little scary!
The last few months, since I was appointed, have gone really quickly and I have spent about one day a week at Lambeth meeting with all the staff and many students. I have met with some parents as well and hope to meet more once I start in January. I have been talking with people about what they think are the strengths of the school and what could be even better. I have been so impressed and encouraged by the energy and vibrancy of everyone associated with Lambeth. The real strengths are the students and staff – their diversity and sense of community. What a great starting point! At the moment I am the Principal of Swindon Academy. I have worked in Swindon for 7 ½ years but before that I worked in London schools. I love London and have kept a home here – in the last 18 months I have commuted to Swindon every day – a 2 hour journey each way! I now live in East London and as from January my commute will be 40 minutes – I won’t know what to do with this extra time I will have! This is the first blog I have ever done so I hope it has served as a small taster of what may come!! See you all in January!
