International Community
Lambeth Academy believes in the education of young people as global citizens. Our International Policy clearly states that we want to enable our pupils to engage with the wider world around them. In the last academic year students and staff have worked very hard in order to collect the evidence for the portfolio for the Full International School Award and we are very proud that Lambeth Academy has now gained the ISA Award for 2009-2012. There will be more interesting global projects on a regular basis and we are looking forward to working with our international partners.
We are an International Torchlight School for Promethean, which means that we regularly have international visitors to observe lessons and the use of modern technology in our class rooms, while at the same time meeting with groups of our pupils to discuss their views on the benefits of Teaching and Learning through the use of modern technology. In order to gain the Full International School Award we have put together an action plan of activities which include our partner schools worldwide. Lambeth Academy is linked with Portugal, Germany, Russia, China, India, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, and Cape Town and we are just establishing our link to Paris and Chicago. Visits to and from these countries have taken place and our pupils enjoy the various possibilities which arise from communicating with their peers from other countries. Lambeth Academy is represented on the Global Gateway and we are also using Rafi.ki in order to safely allow communication between young people around the world.
Lambeth Academy has filmed a live video conference session with a Chinese Primary School in China We have won the UK first prize in the 100 word Chinese Competition and in general we participate in various international/global programmes throughout the year. Lambeth Academy has also fundraised for Charity to build a Primary School as Project Cameroon. Through the work of pupils, parents and teachers we were able to get enough money together to build the Islamic Primary School in Bamali, Cameroon.
In partnership with the Chinese government of Heilongjiang Province we are supporting the Voluntary Teachers Scheme, which allows young teachers from China to come to us and South London partner schools to teach Mandarin Chinese for a full year. This scheme is extremely successful and gives our pupils a first hand experience of the culture of China.
Each September we have got a group of sixth form students from our German Partner school coming over for dedicated time to discuss political issues with our own sixth form students and also to engage in Shakespeare workshops. These days have proven to be really popular with our students.
We understand our Internationalism far beyond the teaching of languages. As much as we are a Language Specialist School, which means we have secure dedicated times for learning languages and an innovative approach to MFL, we encourage the cultural exchange with other countries. In Lambeth Academy you do not need to be an expert in a language to be able to benefit from any of our cultural exchanges and projects which are curriculum based and allow student discussions on a number of issues.
