Local Community

We have formed some strong links with the community. We are supporting Local Primary Schools with various activities and as part of the Clapham and Stockwell Collaborative of Schools.

Pupils and teachers are regularly invited to participate in curriculum projects in our school. We worked together on the "Let's get cooking scheme." We very much believe in family learning and adult education at the same time as providing for our pupils. Lambeth Academy offers family learning clubs for Portuguese parents to improve their English skills, at the same time we offer English classes for Somali families.

We are working very closely on this with the Lambeth City Learning Centre who provides various other courses for the Academy. Furthermore we offer informal talks to Portuguese parents about the English school system and support identified parents with numeracy and literacy classes. On drop days we also offer other family learning activities for example art classes.

We have a large offer of extension clubs during lunch and after school facilitated by our own teachers and outside providers. Whenever there is the Abbeville Fete in our direct neighbourhood our school gets involved with the local shops and restaurants and our pupils perform during the festivities.

Some of our pupils from ethnic minorities come from Portuguese and Somali background. Lambeth Academy has become a cluster for supplementary schools and we are working closely with the Somali community by inviting them in for support and mentoring of Somali pupils and their families with great success.

Lambeth Academy is providing the whole building for the community as a resource. Various sports clubs are regularly using our facilities.

Whenever there are civic occasions, we are very happy to host those events and also get fully involved. For example the Lambeth College Prize award, the Annual Portuguese Achievement Award and the Black Children Achievement Award. The Clapham Society have hosted their annual meeting here. Next we will celebrate the borough's Somali achievement Award in our school. We pride ourselves in celebrating the heritage of all of our pupils and especially those award ceremonies are a perfect chance to have the whole borough come together in our school to work, celebrate and also entertain together.

Our teachers here are also working with local businesses and we have launched the Career Academy. This programme enables our year 12 and 13 pupils to gain insight in business structures all over London and the companies involved with us are mentoring our pupils on a regular basis. They offer workshops within the companies and we are currently discussing the possibilities of intern ships with those companies. We are part of the Business Language Champion scheme and are linked with a London based international recruitment office, where our pupils get the chance to sit in live interviews in different languages. At the same time we are part of the Arsenal Double Club which reinforces language learning with football.

We have strong partnerships with other educational providers including progression routes with London South Bank University and St John's College, Cambridge. We also have an agreement with Lambeth College and Epsom College, a leading independent school, to expand the choices for students.
