Specialist Language School
At Lambeth Academy we are continuing to expand our MFL provision. All KS3 students study either French or Spanish and some students in each year group also study a second language (chosen from French, German, Mandarin and Spanish). These four languages are also available at KS4 and all students are encouraged to study at least one language.
This year has seen the introduction of new NVQ language courses in French, German and Spanish in years 8-11. These are running alongside the traditional GCSE courses and provide our students with a wider curriculum choice. This is an exciting development which links our MFL and Business & Enterprise Specialisms.
The European Day of Languages was celebrated throughout the school through assemblies. On 27th September, Y7s were joined by several of our local primary schools to take part in our annual EDL event where our own bilingual KS3 & KS4 students ran taster sessions in their own languages. There was also a range of language and culture-based activities on offer and the day was very enjoyable and rewarding.
In November we had our first visiting MFL theatre group come in to perform to our Y7 French students and pupils from several local primaries. Students had the wonderful opportunity to not only see the French theatre performance, but also participate in the show. This was a very enjoyable afternoon and we are looking forward to the Spanish theatre visit in the summer term.
Our Mandarin Chinese provision continues to expand, with students currently able to study the language in years 7-11. Building on the success of last year’s Chinese New Year celebrations at Lambeth Academy, in February this year all students this year were treated to performances in assemblies. Local primary schools were also invited to share in an afternoon of performances which included dance and Kung-Fu displays as well as traditional Chinese music. Our new Chinese club starting in March aims to offer our students an even wider access to Chinese culture and traditions, with a range of activities including cooking, calligraphy and martial arts.
Our Y7 students are looking forward to our day trip to France at the end of March and the day promises to be a very rewarding experience for all involved.
We are a diverse and inclusive school and many of our students speak an additional language at home. With over 30 languages represented, some of these include Portuguese, Somali, Albanian, Spanish and French. As well as encouraging our native speakers of the core taught languages to do early entry GCSE, a number of students have also taken qualifications in other home languages in the past including Arabic, Turkish and Urdu.
Our Portuguese community continues to grow with extra-curricular clubs and classes for our native speakers. This year we are continuing to take part in the Arsenal Double Club scheme which gives both native and non-native speakers the exciting chance to learn Portuguese, culminating in a visit to the Emirates Stadium. This was greatly enjoyed last year and gave our students the opportunity to practise their new language skills.
