Citizenship
Citizenship is an incredibly new, vibrant and most
importantly, necessary subject on the national curriculum. It sets out in its
remit to offer children a set of life skills in areas including relationship
building, the environment, the community and the global family. The course
teaches our young people to become active participants in the society they live
in and lessons focus on subjects including human rights, politics and the
media, managing personal finances, pollution, fair and equal trade and legal
matters. The course aims to include modules designed to get students aware of
their surroundings and keen to actively pursue and engender change for the
good. All our students study Citizenship in Key Stage 3 and at GCSE. A levels
in Politics and Sociology (subjects closely related to Citizenship) are on
offer in the 6th form.
Maths
Mathematics is the means of looking
at the patterns that make up our world and the intricate and beautiful ways in
which they are constructed and realised. Numeracy is the means of making that
knowledge useful. At Lambeth
Academy, Mathematics
contributes to the school curriculum by developing students’ abilities to
calculate; to reason logically, algebraically, and geometrically; to solve
problems and to handle data. Mathematics is important for students in many
other areas of study, particularly Science and Technology. It is also important
in everyday living, in many forms of employment, and in public decision-making.
Teaching and learning of Mathematics presents frequent opportunities for
creativity, and can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder when a problem is
solved for the first time, or a more elegant solution to a problem is
discovered, or when hidden connections suddenly manifest. Students at Lambeth Academy are able to explore Mathematics
through a variety of teaching methods and activities outside normal timetabled
lessons, including a dedicated Maths Day where students compete in teams to
solve mathematical based tasks. The department offers GCSEs in Maths and
Additional Maths and A level Maths.
Modern Foreign Languages
Languages
are part of the cultural richness of our society and the world in which we live
and work. Learning languages contributes
to mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfilment. Students learn to appreciate different
countries, cultures, communities and people.
By making comparisons, they gain insight into their own culture and
society. The ability to understand and
communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment
and leisure in this country and throughout the world.
Learning languages gives students opportunities to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and to express themselves with increasing confidence, independence and creativity. They explore the similarities and differences between other languages and English and learn how language can be manipulated and applied in different ways.
Students at Lambeth
Academy are offered the
opportunity to study French, Spanish, German and Chinese at KS3. As a Specialist Language
College, all students
study at least one language in KS4, with the option of studying a combination
of these subjects at GCSE level and beyond into AS and A2 level. During the course of their language studies,
emphasis is not only placed on developing specific language skills, but also on
developing language-learning strategies which support independent learning. The development
of communication skills, together with understanding of the structure of
language, lay the foundations for future study of other languages and support
the development of literacy skills in a student’s own language.
Sociology
Sociology
is the study of society! Sociology enables students to think critically
about how we affect society and how society affects us. Sociology can also open
doors to many different careers. The course will help students to gain a
critical understanding of the society in which we live and is taught using a
variety of methods including discussions, group work and personal research. The
type of person who will enjoy Sociology will be someone who enjoys being
challenged by new ideas and talking about them, even though discussion only
forms part of the subject. There is a lot of reading, writing and
individual research to do however for anyone who is interested in the world
about us, there is much that is exciting to be discovered! Sociology can
be chosen as a GCSE option in Year 10 and 11 and at A level.
Health and Social Care and Early
Years
From September 2009 we will have 3
different vocational courses in this area available for either Year 10 and 11
and the 6th form. Courses are taught in collaboration with Lambeth College.
Diploma in Society, Health and Development. This course covers the work of 4 the different sectors: Health, Children’s Services, Care and Legal Services. It uses case studies to allow students to develop knowledge of different professional roles. For instance it might have a case study of a young couple who are expecting their first baby; one may be involved in crime and the other have a family where the grandfather has a disability. The students will be able to explore how different professionals such as doctors, teachers, the police and court system all impact on the family’s life.
BTEC level 2 in Health and Social Care. This course explores communication skills and meeting individuals’’ needs in the care and health sector. It also offers students the opportunity to consider issues such as the impact of diet on health, diversity, anatomy and physiology.
BTEC level 3 award Early Years. This course explores how young children develop and how practitioners work with parents to plan and meet their developmental needs. This includes learning about the early years’ curriculum, child protection and young children’s care needs.
Geography
The Geography department
focuses on providing students with an understanding of the issues facing them
in the 21st century. We encourage pupils to learn a variety of
geographical skills to aid their understanding and awareness of places at
local, national and international scales.
At key stage 3 the modules of study include – Volcanoes and Earthquakes, The Geography of Sport, Rivers and Flooding, Trade and Aid and Ecosystems.
At GCSE students follow the AQA A specification which includes a balance of human and physical geography topics as well as a piece of fieldwork/coursework worth 25% of the overall mark.
Geography is also studied at Years 12 and 13 where students can chose from a range of modules to tailor their learning towards there personal and career interests.
We believe all pupils can achieve in Geography and to this end, adopt a range of teaching and learning techniques to cater for all our students needs. Students take part in role plays, model making, ICT tasks, debates and geographical games as well as extended writing tasks and presentations.
Fieldwork is seen as an essential learning experience at all levels of study from Year 7 to Year 13. The Geography department provides fieldwork and educational visits to encourage a genuine enjoyment of Geography and to promote learning outside of the classroom environment. We believe that this helps students to achieve and therefore become more confident and experience greater success.
