Unveiling of a statue of Yuri Gagarin

On Thursday 14th July Year 10 students George Hadley, Aisha Diomande, Derek Aka and Francesca Crittell attended the unveiling of a statue of Yuri Gagarin to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his pioneering space flight and his subsequent visit to the UK.  Lambeth Academy was one of only 6 schools selected to take part and be part of the ceremony under the watchful eye of the press and media.  The morning began with a message from astronauts aboard the International Space Station honouring Yuri Gagarin, followed by the unveiling of the statue by Gagarin’s daughter, Elena Gagarina and HRHs Prince & Princess Michael of Kent.  Students had an opportunity to meet all of the VIP guests and then view an exhibition on Gagarin’s flight.
