Examination results Summer 2009

Key Stage 4/GCSE

Our GCSE results for our first cohort of students are shown in summary below. We had great commitment to these courses from all of our students as is shown by the large number obtaining 5A*-G passes.

Our A*-C figures are not yet where we want them. We are confident that these figures will rise over the next two years and move above national standards. Our target, agreed by governors, is for 45% A*-C inc. English and Maths in Summer 2010 and 50% in Summer 2011.

Key to our success will be the continuing rise in attainment in Maths where our first year of students had had a disrupted curriculum at Key Stage 3. The Maths department worked very effectively to raise standards during Key Stage 4 from a low KS3 base to achieve 40% gaining a C grade or better. With students now coming up from Key Stage 3 better prepared, we expect this figure to move above 50% next year.

Results in English were 52.15% gaining a C grade or better.

Results in other subjects are worthy of note. We achieved close to or above national outcomes in:

All students who achieved level 5 in their tests at the end of primary school got 5 or more GCSE passes at grade B or above.

Key Stage 3

In the absence of Key Stage 3 national tests this summer, our core subject areas of English, Maths and Science all used a variety of assessment materials, including SATs tests from previous years to make an assessment of the levels of Key Stage 3 students.

Results improved again this year for the third year running at both level 5 and level 6 attainment.

Results in Science have shown a particularly steep increase this year as the new scheme of work establishes itself.

A-levels

The first twenty students graduated from our pilot sixth form this year. All of them came to us from other schools and many of them had GCSE results below the normal requirement for doing A-level courses.

These students achieved a 97.9% pass rate which is above the National figure and 15 have progressed to University with four going into employment training and one taking a gap year before going to University next year. We hope to feature some of their experiences on this website after they return to visit us in November to talk to our current Year 11 students.
