Enrichment Opportunities
Advanced Extension Awards (AEAs)
AEAs were first examined in 2002 and were introduced to challenge the top 10% of students nationally in each subject and to ensure that the most able students are tested against standards comparable with the most demanding to be found in other countries. AEA qualifications are included in the UCAS tariff and are equivalent to 40 points for a distinction and 20 points for a merit. The key to AEAs is that they require no additional taught content and instead test student's depth of understanding in a subject and their ability to think creatively and critically in a formal examination at the end of Year 13. AEAs are offered in the following subjects: Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, English, French, Geography, German, History, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Religious Studies and Spanish.
Internationalism
Lambeth Academy has Language Specialism and as part of this we are developing strong links to the international community to allow students access to amazing opportunities. We already have partners in Europe and beyond and we are hoping that our Sixth Form will build on this. Two exciting projects which are ongoing are our project with Sierra Leone and our whole school campaign for Cameroon. Please feel free to ask more about either of these enrichment opportunities by email, phone or at one of open evenings.
Sixth Form students travelled to Russia, Poland, Spain and many other places last year.
Community Development Opportunities
All Sixth Form students take part in the CDO's offered to them and many students find their own opportunities. This year we have had younger students being mentored by our Sixth Form students, work in the PE department and work with local primary schools. We are always looking for more ways for our students to be involved in our community and any ideas they have are always well received.
Career Academy
Lambeth Academy has, this year, been approved to run a Career Academy with BTEC Business Finance Students. Students will go through a thorough application process, where a lucky few will gain a place on this highly sought after programme.
On this extremely high-profile and nationally recognised programme, students combine study with focused industry specific learning, occurring in the workplace.
The Lambeth Academy Career Academy is a programme run in partnership with Career Academies UK, an organisation which leads and supports a national movement of employers, schools and colleges, working to raise the aspirations of Key-Stage 5 students who are considering a career in Business.
The programme is designed to provide young people with extensive and engaging work based learning during their studies:
- Guru-Lectures from respected individuals
- Workshops in high-profile companies in the City of London, and Canary Wharf
- The possibilty of students having a professional mentor who works in the world of business
The programme wil also include students being given a 6-week paid internship in the summer of Year 12, where they will work in a role designed to closely match their career ambitions.
The aim is to develop young people into confident and employable individuals, with experience in their chosen field.
The Career Academies UK model aims to revolutionise partnerships between employers and schools, transforming the lives of the Key Stage 5 studentswho are given the opportunity to take part. The Career Academy runs alongside a professionally delivered vocational qualification, enabling students to develop a broad business-based knowledge.
This is a landmark programme for Lambeth Acdemy, and the students who were successful in gaining a place for 2008-2010 are already starting to see the benefits of this prestigious programme.
For further information about this programme please feel free to contact Mr Dan Blakemore at Lambeth Academy.
Other Enrichment and Extension opportunities
Students will also be able to enrich they studies with a wide variety of opportunities outside of the more formal programme. There will be chances to mentor younger students either academically or as part of our excellent PE provision. Students who join us in September will also be able to join us on a residential weekend which will once again build on our international outlook but also be a great chance for new students to get to know each other.
Our students will be encouraged to be fully, active members of our community and if you have your own ideas about how you or others could enrich their education at Lambeth Academy please let us know.
