Student Voice
With the introduction of a new pastoral house system at the academy in September 2008 there was a significant development in the way in which your voices could make yourselves heard. Your views helped to develop the structure of the new system, by working in focus groups helping to make decisions on the house names, the role of prefects and other aspects of house identity.
One idea that you thought was very important was that as part of the new house system each house should have its own council to discuss and represent on the issues facing the students in that house. This was discussed and agreed by the leadership team at the academy and the House Councils have been running successfully since September discussing issues such as uniform, lunchtime arrangements and inter-house challenges.
The success of the House Councils has also led to a Prefect Council being formed to liaise between staff and prefects on the role of prefects, prefect duties and the privileges that prefects can expect when they are appointed. In addition to the two new council structures, the Student Executive Council meets to discuss issues facing the whole academy, to report back on the different issues raised by the House Councils, and to contribute to focus groups who are working on important issues such as the timings of the school day and the development of the student planner.
