Project Cameroon

We started Project Cameroon in 2007 to provide 3 classrooms, 3 latrines and running water for a primary school in Cameroon, but needed to raise £11500, and so the challenge began. Year 10 Engineering students built the Coppers for Cameroon box (which collected an amazing £340); you cooked patties like crazy to sell at productions and did cake sales; made CD’s celebrating your musical talents; disco-danced the night away and took part in sponsored sporting events. Parents came with their money to the productions and shows; bought your goodies and joined in the quiz, catch-up and comedy nights where Simon Amstell and Jo Brand performed for free because they thought it was such a good cause. None of this would have been possible without the support and time given by staff (who also charaoke’d the night away recently). Because of everyone’s joint efforts we raised the money we needed and built IPS Bamali.

Last November myself and Mr Hogarth visited IPS during the celebratory opening of its new classrooms. Their students and those from other local schools sang and danced; 2000 parents, members of the local community and important government officials attended and this reminded us of our community’s united efforts. They thanked Lambeth Academy for everything we have done to help the people of Bamali.

This year we want to raise another £5000 to refurbish the other old classrooms. Check out www.schoolsforafrica.co.uk to read more about this project and others like it. There’s also a ‘Just Giving’ page if you or parents fancy contributing. We shall be going over again this October and who knows, maybe next year you could come with us…
