EAL

The Elms Academy understands that the ability to speak a language other than English is a positive advantage, not a hindrance. The EAL department aims to help students whose first language is not English to realise this advantage.

In practice, this means that we work most often with students who are new to this country, and whose knowledge of English is at a comparatively low level. We offer a mixture of withdrawal lessons and in-class support in a range of subjects, as well as being available as far as possible throughout the school day if students need help with work, have a problem they want to discuss, or just need somewhere quiet to sit.

We work closely with departments to try to ensure that new EAL students are placed in sets which are appropriate for their ability level, not their current level of English, and we offer support and advice to help empower the students to achieve their potential.
